Cut u off

Cut u off started with me asking Seshun to send me some beats to write to in early 2023. When I heard the instrumental for what become this song, I started writing to it and it reminded me of Cut you off by Kendrick Lamar.

To pay homage to that song, I start both verses the same way he did with: “I'm tryna learn somethin' new…”

I wanted to add a layer to the song besides just outgrowing old friends and focusing on your goals; I thought it would be interesting to also talk about how isolation could have negative roots.

Thinking about my life, and a lot of my poems/songs I noticed a lot of what I was doing was engaging with the idea of people and our prior relationships, because I was in full control in that scenario.

Having real relationships in real life is a lot more uncertain and vulnerable. What if the person they are today is no longer compatible with you? What if they aren't that ideal swooning version of themselves you have up in your head?

That is where lines like this come from:

“I romanticize the vacancies
Rather fantasize and make believe
than face the fact
this whole cast got their own agency
She could be indifferent
By now she could be hatin’ me
And that smile that I would pay to see
is no longer awaiting me”

The artwork is a callback to the cover for Voicemail, since this song is about the same theme.

I went out to Music in Focus studio to have it recorded, mixed and mastered. I sang the hook myself, though I have no singing experienced so we had to enhance my vocals a bit and add in harmonies with a plugin. I'm hoping I find some time to take some proper singing lessons in the future so I can do more in that area of my songs.

As always, Dennis filmed the performance video. We filmed it at a local video and photo studio space called The Bolt.

Hope you enjoy the track!

Lyrics

Hook:

I just want
you to know
there's no love lost
but I had to cut you off

I just want
you to know
there's no love lost
but I had to cut you off

Verse 1

I'm tryna learn somethin’ new
Maybe it's defensive, maybe it's protective
Hell, maybe both
But anytime someone gets too close
I vamonos
Closed casket the relationship
I'm going to see the lady
soon as I can pay for it
I want love
as long as I'm chasing it
More writing ‘bout it
than facing it
than leaving where the safeness is
I romanticize the vacancies
Rather fantasize and make believe
than face the fact
this whole cast got their own agency
She could be indifferent
By now she could be hatin’ me
And that smile that I would pay to see
is no longer awaiting me

Hook

I just want
you to know
there's no love lost
but I had to cut you off

I just want
you to know
there's no love lost
but I had to cut you off

Verse 2

I'm tryna learn somethin’ new
There's a growin’ list of things I refuse to fucking do
Doing meditation
Got a business book or two
I'm on
do not disturb at the gym
I do not concern myself with
who back out and at it again
who's backyard the party is in
I don't
come around
I know
Ain't no love lost
I'm just living for tomorrow
You're stuck in yesterday
I'm studyin’ the greats
I'm jottin’ takeaways
and I'm tryna emulate
My number still the same
but I am not the same I
I just want you to know

Outro

I just want
you to know
there's no love lost
but I had to cut you off

had to cut you off
had to cut you off
had to cut you off
had to
