WYSHOY

WYSHOY (Why you so hard on yourself) started when I was writing to an instrumental I found from Mike Lakes. At the time I was going through a rough patch, and this was as much a song to myself as anyone else.

Despite having objectively made progress and achieved some of my goals, I realized my inner voice was still overly critical when I hit a time of lower energy or motivation and felt like I should be more productive than I was.

I recently listened to this episode of one of my favorite podcasts about philosopher Byung-Chul Han and it got me thinking about burnout and today's productivity culture. I added his book The Burnout Society to my reading list and I am hoping to read it soon.

The cover art is the chemical structure of the stress hormone Cortisol. I have been using a ton of simplistic cover art, but I am trying to think of new ideas and find some artists I can work with consistently in the future.

The song was recorded, mixed, and mastered at Music in Focus studio.

Dennis shot the performance video; and we went to The Bolt here in Fort Worth to shoot it.

Hope you enjoy the track!

Why you so hard on yourself
Why you so hard on yourself

Why are you so critical
Self love is so difficult
You're a twisted individual

Why you so hard on yourself
Why you so hard on yourself
No one sees all the flaws but yourself

They love you as you are

Tell me
Why that’s so hard to accept

Verse 1

You’re never enough
and you won't ask for help
You won't open up
for fear you'll be dealt
a bad hand
Can it be that everyone ain't bluffin’ like you think
That life is life and not a game of strategy
That you don't always have to be
on alert
and actually
others would be happily
pourin’ into you
Would acceptin’ be so challengin’
This keeping score that's happenin’
in your mind
might be detached from reality
If you had nothing to offer
they’d keep giving
Ain't it crazy
Love ain't predicated
on expectations
Ain't it crazy
Just reach out
and maybe they’d be waiting
Just reach out

Verse 2

So everyone that’s ever shown you love was wrong
Your success
was all luck of the draw
And only you can see that you’re a fraud
That you get weak
fatigued but you can’t sleep
too drained to even speak
braindead, gone for weeks
You did it again
Went too hard
Hit your limit again
Negative thoughts make their tenements in
your mind
They’re your tenants again
